Get to know: Elizabeth Holmer, Physical Therapist Assistant Adjunct

Elizabeth Holmer

Elizabeth "Betsy" Holmer

If you're a student in ECC's Physical Therapist Assistant program, then you're familiar with Elizabeth Holmer. The adjunct instructor teaches two classes and is a tutor in the program's laboratory.

“I am with the students for their full five semesters,” she said.

Elizabeth served as a clinical instructor for ECC students before working for the college in 2008. We asked her questions about herself and the college. Here are her responses.

What do you do at ECC?

I teach two PTA courses: Kinesiology, and Medical Terminology and Documentation. I am also the skill test and/or tutor in the laboratory.  I am with the students for their full five semesters.

What is your greatest accomplishment since you've been here?

It's rewarding to see students in their first contact in a patient simulation-with the assorted nervousness and anxiety that accompanies it-to graduation where they are confident, proficient, and can organize and perform and document a full patient care session! That and figuring some things out on D2L!

What would you do if you were ECC president for a day?

I would love for each division to have a sharing day. Employees could shadow another staff member/instructor or see each division present what the various programs are.

If there was a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?

I'm typecasting on height, but Sally Field or Bette Midler. Their younger versions, of course!

What's on your “bucket list?”

I would like to travel through Europe, specifically the United Kingdom. That, and be around to see my grandchildren!

What's one fact we should know about you?

I have a spatial photographic memory.

What's something about your job that others should know?

I work year round between teaching and being in the clinical laboratory.

What was your favorite class in school?

I did musical theater in high school and sang in the college choir. In my professional education nothing compared with the anatomy coursework. We were fortunate to do full cadaver dissection for a year.

What was your first job out of school?

I had a college scholarship from a local women's club that required me to work a year at (Advocate) Sherman Hospital, which was then on the east side of Elgin.

Complete this sentence: “I enjoy working at ECC because … “

It keeps my skills as a clinician current by sitting in on classroom lectures, especially evidence-based practices, in addition to hearing what other clinical sites are doing via the students' feedback from their clinical experiences.
