ECC: Bright Choice, Bright Future

ECC Students

"There are no limits to an ECC education. In addition to impacting our community, we also make dreams come true!"

What comes to mind when you hear the words “community college?” The words “affordability and access” are probably two of the most common adjectives often used to describe the role of community colleges throughout the country.

When you think of Elgin Community College I hope you consider the words “valuable” and “life changing.”

Community Colleges should serve the needs of the community, prepare students for the workforce and change lives. And that is exactly what we do at ECC.

As you know, our mission is to improve people's lives through learning. Mike Keissami is living proof that ECC lives up to that mission.

Mr. Keissami, a native of Iran, moved to Elgin to attend ECC in 1978. During his time at the institution, he experienced firsthand the benefits of attending a community college and how it can make a difference and change lives. Within a short year of living in the United States, the 1979 Iranian Revolution started in his country, which made life more challenging.  As a result of the war, Mr. Keissami had limited contact with his family and had difficulty receiving financial support from the company funding his education. In order to make ends meet, he worked nights, and attended ECC on very little sleep after his shift ended the next morning.

But his determination paid off. Mr. Keissami graduated from ECC in 1981. You may recognize him as the owner of Larkin Floral and Gifts in Elgin for over 25 years.

More than 30 years later, he credits ECC for assisting him on his educational journey during a very difficult time.

And there are many more ECC alumni, like Mr. Keissami, who remain in the community long after they have left Elgin Community College.

These alumni are nurses at local hospitals, business owners, chefs, and first responders working to save lives in District 509.

Preparing students to contribute to a more skilled workforce, which enhances our community, is at the very heart of what we do! There are no limits to an ECC education. In addition to impacting our community, we also make dreams come true!

~ David Sam, PhD, JD, LLM, president of Elgin Community College
