ECC built my confidence, sharpened my goals

Jason Jarrett 1

Elgin Community College has had a great impact on my life. By actively participating in student clubs and other activities on campus, these programs have advanced my skills, as well as given me the motivation to work toward the completion of my goals. Getting a certificate and degree from ECC was an important mission in my life and has laid the groundwork for getting closer to my career goals.

My most memorable experience took place in the Arts Center's Blizzard Theater on Oct. 22, 2015-the day when I was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. The reason that experience was important was because it introduced a new chapter in my life and was a reflection of all my hard work and dedication to excel in college, even though as a returning adult student I had faced many obstacles.

At ECC, I have learned the qualities of leadership, such as how to move beyond difficulties, how to influence others, and how to lead effective meetings. Also I have learned the importance of maintaining good listening and group processing skills.

The activities I have been involved in have given me plenty of opportunities that I would not have otherwise. For example, I have had the privilege of interviewing Jade Simmons, an American classical concert pianist, author, arts presenter, lecturer and arts entrepreneur. Additionally, I served as an assistant to and received knowledge and guidance from David Stovall, Ph.D., a professor of educational policy studies and African-American studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Being with these renowned individuals increased my confidence and gave me a sense of accomplishment.

Furthermore, I received support from several members of the faculty, support staff, and administration-all of whom contributed to the enhancement and development of my self-confidence, dedication, perseverance, ambition, and most importantly, my determination. As a result, I have been an inspiration to others and have discovered a passion for helping others achieve their dream. Since I'm passionate about helping people, one day I will start a foundation aimed at providing a support system and resources for those seeking to succeed.

After graduating from ECC I will transfer to Columbia College of Missouri to pursue my Bachelor of Science in business administration with a concentration in management. Upon completion of my bachelor's degree, my subsequent goal is to enroll at Northwestern University and enter their joint JD-MBA program where I will earn my JD from the Northwestern School of Law and a MBA from the Kellogg School of Management.

Once I have completed my education, my goal is to become a corporate attorney and ultimately seek a political career in the United States Senate, where I hope to lead or become the chairman of the United States Senate Select Intelligence Committee.

In conclusion, ECC has been a bright choice for me. I have grown personally and professionally; have met wonderful, supportive people; and have solidified my career goals. Indeed, without my ECC experience, I would not be the confident leader I am today.
