ECC celebrates Women’s History Month

An Inspiring Woman is given her nomination letter during last year's Inspiring Women's Tea

Elgin Community College will hold a series of events and activities throughout March during its monthlong celebration of Women's History Month. All events are free, open to the public, and will be held at ECC's Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, unless otherwise noted.

Below is a list of events that will take place during the Women's History Month celebration:

Love Your Body Day
Thursday, March 1
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Building B Hallway

Create your own t-shirt to reflect your sense of value and beauty as a woman. Wear your t-shirt any day in March to honor Womenʼs History Month.

Love Your Body Day Zumba
Thursday, March 1
1 to 2 p.m.
Building B, Jobe Lounge

Love your body as you dance all your cares away with Zumba instructor Surhy Toledano.

Immigrant Women's Roundtable 
Tuesday, March 8
12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Building B Heritage Room, Room B180

This roundtable gathers women immigrants from ECC and the community to tell their stories about coming to the United States, struggles they faced and hopes that helped them to endure.

The Personal is Political: Exploring Feminism & Relationships
Monday, March 12
11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Building B Alumni Room, Room B182

What does a healthy relationship look like? How can feminism and gender equality improve the ways we love one another? Licensed Clinical Social Worker Kate McCormack and ECC history professor Antonio Ramirez will explore these questions about striving for equality in heterosexual, LGBTQ and cross cultural relationships.

Transcend: The Accomplishments of Transgender Women

ECC's student organization Students Who Are Not Silent (SWANS) will educate students on the accomplishments of transgender women in the United States.

Bystander Intervention Training
Tuesday, March 20

Open to all students who seek knowledge regarding sexual harassment, sexual assault and intimate partner violence. The training will include how to standup for others in difficult situations, where to go for help and prevention strategies.

African American Subcommittee Luncheon: Queen B Visionary
Tuesday, March 20
Noon to 1 p.m.
Building E Dining Room

Empowering women to become visionary leaders. Create your personal vision board. Cost: $5.00 per person, limited seating. Includes lunch and your vision board. Purchase tickets in Student Life, Room B173. Ask for Lily or Yvette.

Inspiring Women's Tea

Have you been inspired lately by a student or employee at ECC? If so, nominate her as an Inspiring Woman and join them for tea, treats and lively conversation at this exciting event. Email Yvette Argueta at to nominate by March 20. Event is open to the students, faculty and staff of Elgin Community College.

Vanishing Woman
Wednesday, April 4
11 a.m. to noon
Building G, Spartan Auditorium

Featuring actress Jennifer Goran as Ellen Craft, a slave who escaped in 1848 by pretending to be a white man, while her husband posed as her slave.

Women's History Month is presented by the Women's History Month Committee; African American Women's Subcommittee; Student Life Department; Global and International Studies Taskforce (GIST); Multicultural and Global Initiatives Committee (MAGIC); and ECC student organizations Women's Empowerment Alliance (WEA) and Students Who Are Not Silent (SWANS).
